Sanskrit Shlokas on Mothers Day

Here are few lovely Sanskrit shloka on MOTHER to share with you on Mother's Day! This will help us realize how we treated or expected to be treated 'mother' and 'women' in our society during ancient days.

A man who serve mother truthfully will be blessed with long life, success, haven, fame, Laxmi, wealth, cattle, food grain, and everything.

After Ravana's defeat, lord Rama said to Laxman, "Own Mother and birthplace are beautiful and greater than haven."
When Laxman, younger brother of Rama asked Lord Rama to acquire the kingdom (Sri-Lanka) after they had defeated and killed Ravana in the war, Lord Rama advised him to hand over the kingdom to Bibhishan, Ravana's younger brother, a rightful king as it was his mother land and Bibhishan inherited it after his elder brother's death. We must respect others' land or wealth (or women) without thinking of acquiring it in anyway.

Indian mother and father insist on studies so that their child gain adequate knowledge and skill to lead a respectable life. There is a saying - a king is respected within his kingdom, but a knowledgeable person is respected everywhere.

A noble people treat and respect all the women (except his own wife) as mothers. They consider others' wealth as dust and have no intention of acquiring it in anyway. In addition, they also treat and love every living-being or creature and cause no harm to them in anyway.

Mother, father and friends are the only people who are interested in your well-being in real way. Thinking of 'good' about you is part of their nature and they do it without any condition or expectation or personal gain. So, value them as others in your life may have business/professional relationship based on certain spoken or unspoken terms and condition/benefits.

The ancient Indian tradition teaches us to respect our own mother first, then others in following order - teacher's wife (a brahmin lady), a queen, a cow, a foster mother and the mother earth.  We consider them as MOTHER and respect them at par...

I salute my mother who gave me birth; I also salute my other mothers (women) who added knowledge and wisdom to my actions and life to make me a good human being.

Let you be one who worships mother, father, teachers and guests as 'God'.

When we study our ancient scripture, we realize that there is profound respect given to mother and women in general. So, read the original scripture to know yourself.

Respecting Women is an old Indian tradition...

Respecting women is always been part of our culture since it's origin...
he divine are extremely happy where women are respected ;
where they are not, all actions (projects) are fruitless.
Who is the Goddess of Fortune Herself in the families of the meritorious
The Goddess of ill luck in the homes of the sinful
Thou art the Goddess of Fortune, Thou art the supreme Goddess, Thou art Modesty
The Goddess who resides in all beings as Power
Thou art the woman, Thou art the man, Thou art the boy and the girl as well.

(Non-violence) a misunderstood term in Hinduism

Mahatma Gandhi popularized only part of the Gita quote and I mentioned about this in oct 2014 on Facebook. he perched and popularised partial quote and misguided the nation in the freedom struggle.

Non-violence is the ultimate dharma. But, violence is essential to protect people, their land and the nation and this is every King’s duty (धर्म) that he needs to follow...

1.Rama didn't forgive Ravana in-spite of Ravana being one of the most revered and respected kings at that time having greatest knowledge in Music, Architecture and warfare. His act of abducting other's wife (अबला) who was alone and couldn't defend herself, was just unforgivable and Rama mentioned that they didn't want to set this as an acceptable trend.

2. Krishna advised Arjuna that the act of Drupadi ‘vastraharan’ (disrobing) was not acceptable in anyway. The reason he mentioned was Drupadi was a daughter of powerful king, gifted woman herself, a wife of noble men and a future queen.

He further said, "If you forgive Duryodhan for humiliating such a powerful and respectable woman, there will be no respect for common women in the society."

3. Prithvi Raj Chauhan, a famous Rajput King forgave Md Ghori 16 times as mentioned by few historians. However, when Md Ghori got an opportunity to defeat the Rajput king deceitfully (as his confidant officer, Jaichand helped Md Ghori to capture the king), he did NOT reciprocate the act of 'forgiveness' for once. On the contraryhe killed the Rajput king by torturing him as inhumanly as possible. History witnessed this.

Hinduism talks about compassion(माया), kindness(करूणा) and harmony(सहचार) with every living being, not just restricted to human being. Therefore, there are festivals where Hindus worship cow, bulls, elephants, and the snakes (during nagpanchami). This peace and kindness is also extended to mother nature to value their contribution in our life. The Hindus also revere Mother Nature such as river, the mountain, the farm, the produce and the soil.

So, forgiveness is depends on the situations and thus, non-violence is a relative terms and must be used cautiously.

Why Hindus Worship 'Shiva Linga'?

The lingam or Shiva Linga is the most sacred symbol of Hinduism, as it represents the Lord Shiva, who is worshiped across the Indian subcontinent by Hindus.

Contrary to popular belief that originates from partial meaning of Linga, there is an altogether different meaning and significance to Shiva Linga that is far beyond this superficial belief.

The Meaning of Shiva Linga.
Shiv Linga symbolizes the God himself or his source of energy or cosmic eggs (Brahmanada), and signifies emergence or origin. The base of Shiv Linga represents female yoni, which signifies mergence; thus, Shiv Linga forms highest source of energy in the universe where every life begins...this is the symbol of emerging or beginning of life and merging into the momentary life where everything is ephemeral. The true identity of Shiva Linga is shoonya – void – and symbolizes the sign of zero in ancient mathematics. This also conveys the teaching of leading an “egoless” life in the service of people and the god. The Ganga on the Shiva's head represent the river meeting ocean i.e. devote 'self' into god/universe.

Hindus have always considered life in totality and connect it with universe. The body and energy points, or Chakra, are all scientifically explained and well connected with culture through various religious and cultural practices.

“Self” is not given importance and thus, the Western concept of describing Shiva Linga is factually incorrect.
Shiva Linga and it's concept

The Mythological Story.
The popular and powerful sage Shukaracharya was visiting Lord Shiva in Kailash, one of the sacred Hindu mountains in the Himalayas. When he reached Kailash, he saw that Lord Shiva was busy copulating with Shakti (Goddess Parvathy, Lord Shiva's wife). Lord Shiva was so engrossed in the act that he didn't realize the presence of Sage Shukaracharya. The Sage, well known for his short temper, got annoyed and cursed Lord Shiva in that people would worship his Linga (genitalia) in the future, which was against the usual worshiping practices/norms.

Mahashivaratri.
"Nature specializes in a kind of paradox: Nature destroys and her destruction is always constructive destruction. The bud is destroyed when the flower blooms, and the flower fades when the fruit emerges. The fruit decays when seeds are scattered and seeds decay when plants sprout.

“This process of constructive destruction is Shiva, the annihilator. This Shiva-Ratri is the destruction of the ego  in the discovery of the Self (Shiva).“May all devotees come to experience at least the shy rays of the early dawn at the end of one's inner Ratri, in the emerging beams of Shiva’s spirit in us.

“Be quiet. Be silent within. Blind, Deaf, Mum - be. Invoke . Be expectant. Let Shiva happen - TRY." -Swami Chinmayananda

Shiv Temples.
It is also believed that if a person died where people worshiped Shiv Linga, his soul would go to Shiv-Lok or Shiva's world. This is one reason, one will see a “shiva” temple in every part of India from Kailash, the northern point in Himalaya, to Rameshwara, the southern part, and also Somnath in the west to the eastern point of India.

There are twelve main Jyotirlings and five panch-bhuta Lingas in India.

The 12 Jyotir-Lingas are as listed below:
1. Kedarnath,
2. Kashi Vishwanath,
3. Somnath,
4. Baijnath,
5. Ghrusneswar,
6. Tryambakeshwar,
7. Bhimshankar,
8. Mahakal,
9. Mallikarjun,
10. Amaleshwar,
11. Nageshwar, and
12. Rameswar

The 5 Pancha-Bhuta Lingas are as below:
1. Kalahastishwar,
2. Jambukeshwar,
3. Arunachaleshwar,
4. Ekambareshwar of Kanjivaram, and
5. Nataraja of Chidambaram.
